Accessorial charges in freight transportation are additional fees beyond the standard shipping cost, applied by carriers for services like special equipment, handling, delays, redelivery, layover, lumper, driver Load/Unload, fuel surcharge, additional stops, truck order not used. These charges cover extra labor, time, and resources required for non-standard freight movements.

Orders can sometimes fall through. Most carrier contracts will have a clause allowing for a TONU, but with limitations. There is only a charge if the truck is canceled after a pre-established cut-off time.

If a carrier is delayed for any reason at a shipper/receiver, detention charges may apply. Shipping contracts typically allow for some detention time, but if a driver is detained beyond the time noted, charges are applied. Carriers often choose to avoid these shipments altogether.

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) created the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC) system to make LTL shipping easier. NMFC numbers identify the commodity and categorize it into classes ranging from 50 to 500. Classes are based on density, handling, stowability and liability. By grouping freight, the NMFTA can provide standard rates from which shippers and carriers can negotiate. This helps keep pricing fair and rates consistent. Use this lookup tool to determine the NMFC number for your freight.
